What Is a Diabetic Foot Assessment?
Particular care is given to diabetic patients. Manly Foot Clinic provides thorough diabetes assessments, including vascular (involving toe pressure measurements) and neurological assessment, resulting in providing treatment plans and education for the specialised care of the diabetic foot. Our podiatrists communicate with your GP, Endocrinologist and diabetic educators to collectively care for the condition and your specific needs.
Diabetes can reduce the blood supply to the feet and dull their sensation, so a small injury can go unnoticed and heal slowly. The assessment exists to find those changes before they cause a problem, and to make sure everyone involved in your diabetes care knows what was found.
Who It Helps
Every person living with type 1 or type 2 diabetes benefits from a regular foot assessment, whether or not their feet currently trouble them. It matters most for anyone with reduced sensation, poor circulation, a previous foot ulcer, or a change in the shape of the foot.
Newly diagnosed
A baseline assessment records the state of your circulation, sensation and skin, so later checks have something to compare against.
Reduced sensation or circulation
Where the assessment finds reduced sensation or blood supply, the care plan sets out how often to be reviewed, how to check your own feet, and what footwear to wear.
Nail and skin care
Routine Treatment includes nail care and the treatment of corns and callus. For a person with diabetes, having these done by a podiatrist rather than at home removes an avoidable source of skin breaks.
What to Expect
The assessment is painless and takes place at a normal consultation.
Assessment first
Your podiatrist takes a history of your diabetes and its management, then examines both feet: the pulses and blood supply, the sensation in the skin using standard bedside tests, the skin and nails, the shape of the foot and your footwear.
The treatment
The findings become a written care plan and education for the specialised care of the diabetic foot: what to check, what to avoid, what footwear to wear and when to come back. Any nail, corn or callus care needed is done at the same visit.
A short course
Review intervals depend on what the assessment finds and are set by your podiatrist for you. The clinic has not published a standard interval, so this page does not state one.
Review and progress
